State colleges: Wolverines top Utes in baseball 6-3

Orem • Utah Valley University drove home three runs in the eighth to break a tie and earn a 6-3 victory over the University of Utah in Tuesday night’s baseball game at UCCU Ballpark.

Kade Poulsen started the eighth-inning rally for the Wolverines (10-30) with a leadoff double and later came around to score the go-ahead run on an RBI bloop-single from Kody Hall to give Utah Valley a 4-3 advantage. With two on and two outs, Ryan Eastburn then later plated a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double to left-center to extend UVU’s lead to 6-3.

UVU closer Jesse Schmit (4-5) threw 1 2/3 innings of shutout action to earn the win.

Jayden Kiernan got the start at catcher for Utah and came up big at the plate, going 2 for 3 with all three of the team’s RBIs.

Utah’s starter Dustin Schramm pitched 3 innings and gave up the one run that was unearned. In all, four pitchers threw for Utah and Nick Caviglia took the loss.

Utah and Utah Valley split the series this season as each team won on its home field.
