State colleges: Harding leads Weber State past Northern Arizona, 86-71

Flagstaff, Ariz. • Jerrick Harding scored 29 points as Weber State defeated Northern Arizona 86-71 on Saturday. Cody John added 25 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats.

Israel Barnes had 11 points for Weber State (15-9, 9-4 Big Sky Conference). Michal Kozak added eight rebounds.

Ted McCree had 17 points for the Lumberjacks (7-16, 5-8). Bernie Andre added 13 points and eight rebounds. Brooks DeBisschop had nine rebounds.

Carlos Hines, the Lumberjacks’ second leading scorer coming into the contest at 12 points per game, shot only 20 percent in the game (1 of 5).

The Wildcats improved to 2-0 against the Lumberjacks for the season. Weber State defeated Northern Arizona 77-52 on Jan. 3. Weber State faces Montana at home on Thursday. Northern Arizona faces Portland State on the road on Thursday.

Southern Utah 78, Idaho State 72 • In Cedar City, Andre Adams had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern Utah over Idaho State.

Cameron Oluyitan had 14 points and seven rebounds for Southern Utah (12-10, 7-6 Big Sky Conference), which earned its fifth straight home victory. Dre Marin added 13 points. Jacob Calloway had 13 points for the home team.

Kelvin Jones had 16 points for the Bengals (9-13, 5-8). Brandon Boyd added 16 points. Balint Mocsan had 13 points.

The Thunderbirds leveled the season series against the Bengals with the win. Idaho State defeated Southern Utah 88-68 on Jan. 3. Southern Utah takes on Sacramento State on the road on Thursday. Idaho State faces Montana State at home on Thursday.

Women’s basketball

BYU 75, Pacific 49 • In Provo, the Cougars (18-16, 10-3 WCC) snapped their three-game losing streak with their largest margin of victory in conference play in defeating the Tigers at the Marriott Center.

“It feels nice to get back on track,” BYU coach Jeff Judkins said.

Shaylee Gonzales made 5 of 10 field goal attempts, including a career-high four 3-pointers, to lead BYU with 18 points while also grabbing six rebounds and recording three steals.

Paisley Johnson contributed 17 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

BYU was up 44-19 at the half, matching the most points scored in a half this season for the Cougars.

Lacrosse

Utah 13, Mercer 9 • Josh Stout scored seven goals to lead the Utah lacrosse team to its first win in its history.

“I thought our guys did an awesome job today playing Utah lacrosse,” coach Brian Holman said. “Tough on ground balls, we stuck together. It’s the first and hopefully we’ll get a few more.”

Although Mercer (0-2) scored the first goal of the game, the Utes scored the next five to take a 5-1 lead after the first period.

The Utes (1-1) led 9-6 at halftime and Mercer rallied back in the third to make it a one-goal game, 9-8, but the Utes ended the third quarter with a goal and also scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter.

Stout also had an assist for eight points on the day while Aaron Fjeldsted added three goals for the Utes. James Sexton had a goal with four assists for five points, Brandon Wilson had a goal and an assist and Jake Stout also had a goal.
