Utah Valley University Athletic Director Vince Otoupal has resigned to pursue other opportunities, the school announced Friday.

Otoupal, who served as UVU’s AD for five years, led the Wolverines into the Western Athletic Conference as the school matured into a full-fledged university. He oversaw 16 UVU sports in NCAA Division I competition.

“I have really enjoyed my time at UVU,” Otoupal said in a news release. “The student-athletes at UVU are amazing people. I am proud of what we accomplished during my tenure here. It’s time for me to pursue some things I have wanted to do for a long time, and, as such, I am resigning as director of athletics.”

Jared Sumsion will serve as interim athletic director until a replacement is found.

Since 2013, UVU has won 14 WAC championships, made five NCAA tournament appearances, and named numerous NCAA DI All-Americans. Over the past three years, 95 percent of eligible student-athletes have graduated.

“We appreciate what Vince has done during his five-year tenure,” said Val Peterson, vice president for finance and administration. “Vince helped the athletic program move forward, allowing our athletes not only to compete for championships, but also to succeed in the classroom.”
