State colleges: Utah Valley downs Chicago State 74-60 in men’s basketball

Chicago • Wyatt Lowell had 15 points with nine rebounds off the bench, Jake Toolson scored a game-high 18 points and Utah Valley defeated Chicago State 74-60 on Saturday.

Baylee Steele added 12 points and TJ Washington scored 10 for the Wolverines (15-7, 4-3 Western Athletic Conference).

Cameron Bowles and Anthony Harris scored 17 points apiece and Rob Shaw added 10 points for the Cougars (3-18, 0-6).

Utah Valley has won four of its past five conference games, including the last two on the road. The Wolverines had a 34-21 rebounding advantage against Chicago State and a 14-2 advantage in second-chance points. Utah Valley led 23-8 in points off the bench.

Chicago State has lost 10 in a row and has one win over a Division I team.

Montana 75, Weber State 68 • In Missoula, Mont., Jamar Akoh scored 25 points while grabbing 10 rebounds to help Montana knock off Weber State.

The Wildcats (13-7, 7-2 Big Sky) had won four straight and eight of their last nine games before encountering Montana on Saturday. Weber State’s only conference loss was to Southern Utah 90-82 in overtime on Jan. 5.

Montana (14-6, 7-2), the defending conference champs, never trailed in this one. The Grizzlies, who have won four straight games, were leading 40-26 at the break and held off the Wildcats in the final half of the second period when Akoh scored 12 consecutive points to help the Grizzlies stretch their lead to 63-51 with 9:10 remaining in the game.

Weber State closed to 73-68 after Kendal Manuel split a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining. Sayeed Pridgett, who finished with 12 points, made two free throws in the final seconds to complete the scoring.

Jerrick Harding led the Wildcats with 22 points and Cody John added 14.

Women’s basketball

BYU 65, San Diego 56 • In San Diego, Calif., the Cougars extended their winning streak to 11 games with a victory over the Toreros at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Shaylee Gonzales led the Cougars (17-3, 9-0 West Coast Conference) with 17 points, five steals, four rebounds, two assists and one block.

Paisley Johnson and Jasmine Moody contributed 13 points apiece. Moody added 12 rebounds to her career-best points total for her first career double-double.

BYU took a 43-38 lead into the fourth quarter, but San Diego narrowed the gap to one point at 53-52.

Johnson hit two 3-pointers in a rwo in the final minutes to keep the Cougars out in front.


Aquatics

Utah men, women sweep BYU • The Utah men’s swimming and diving teams swept BYU 181-119, while the Utah women were 197-103 winners over their rivals.

Utah senior Daniel McArthur began the day leading off the 200 medley relay. He went on to win the 100 back in 48.77, the 200 back in 1:48.81 and the 200 IM in 1:51.65.

Nick Becker won a pair of events for Utah, claiming the top spot in the 500 free (4:38.52) and the 1,000 free (9:35.28).

Darby Wayner won three events for Utah’s women’s team, taking the 100 breast in 1:03.31, the 200 breast in 2:20.83 and the 200 IM in 2:06.72.

BYU’s Payton Sorenson took the win for the men in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle with times of 20.57 and 45.36, respectively. Freshman Gwen Gustafson won the women’s 50 freestyle (23.54) and 100 freestyle (51.44).
