Utah Christians united to mark the start of Western Christianity’s holiest weekend of the year with a Good Friday procession through the heart of Salt Lake City.

It marked the 40th anniversary of this pre-Easter staple. (It didn’t take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The annual interfaith Procession of the Cross started at the Cathedral of the Madeleine on South Temple followed by stops at nearby First Presbyterian Church, Crossroads Urban Center, First United Methodist Church and St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral.

The march is meant to symbolically retrace Jesus’ steps to Golgotha, with participants taking turns bearing the cross in a buildup to Easter Sunday.
