Dear good people of Utah,
I live in D.C. and this is what The Washington Post said:
“The bipartisan effort to ban the demolition of presidential memorials was thwarted in the Senate by an objection from a single senator — Mike Lee (R-Utah).”
The “presidential memorial” is the Kennedy Center. And I am trying to understand why you all in Utah sent a representative to Congress who would allow a single individual to decide to tear it down. The Kennedy Center had free entertainment. And food that was affordable. And a balcony that looked out on the Potomac River. And it was in OK shape — making ends meet and not falling apart — until the present administration took the money designated to repair the roof and instead repainted the columns.
So I started to ask you how you could support Mike Lee. Then I saw that young Riley Owen — Republican candidate for Utah’s 1st Congressional District — won’t even commit to protecting Utah’s national monuments. He won’t even condemn the effort to reduce Bears Ears and Grand Staircase by 90% (according to Owen’s website)!
In D.C., we have no representation in the Senate or the House of Representatives. So we are pretty helpless as the rest of America makes the laws that we live by. And the laws that you folks in Utah are making (and sometimes violating) are pretty much destroying our country.
You’ll say Bears Ears and The Kennedy Center are nothing compared to the arsenic that they now allow in our water, the pollution they now allow in our air, and the support of governments run by unelected thugs — and I will say that you are right.
But our monuments are important too. And seeing their destruction makes me wonder: Why do you want to send people like Mike Lee and Riley Owen to Washington?
Cathy Carroll, Washington, D.C.
