It is my opinion that Donald Trump has done great damage to the United States of America.

But, he has not done that alone. With their ideological bent toward small government and their mission to give tax cuts to the wealthy, the Republicans in Congress have enabled the downfall of our institutions, our great programs, and our standing in the world.

Republican members of Congress have supported Trump’s folly into Iran. They have voted for every incompetent Cabinet member. With their systematic decimation of the Affordable Care Act, Americans now have poorer affordable health care. Medical research has been denigrated. Food safety has gone out the window. Greenhouse gases continue unabated with Trump’s and the Republican Congress’ mission to increase oil and gas production and to decrease funding for alternative energy sources.

The destruction to our national parks (Bears Ears, Great Basin, Big Bend) in favor of extraction of oil, gas and minerals, or to keep out a handful of immigrants, is fully supported by Republicans in Congress.

With all the tax cuts that have mainly gone to the wealthy, they have built an unsustainable national debt. Their support of Trump’s tariffs, their decimation of capitalism by removing regulations and allowing government ownership of companies, and their passage of the “big, beautiful bill” has led to inflation and made it more and more difficult to have an affordable life.

Furthermore, they have stood idly by as the physical destruction occurs around them in Washington D.C. — the tearing down of the east wing of the White House; the decimation of the reflecting pool due to mismanagement; the closure of the Kennedy Center — all the while watching as the interior of the White House turns into gaudy gold.

We have an election in November. I hope Americans remember who the people are that have given us all of the above. Four of them are Utah’s representatives to the House who have fully supported all of the above by their votes or by their silence.

We have a choice in November: whether to continue with this nonsense and destruction or whether to vote in new representatives who will work for the people and bring about the change that we so desperately need.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
