Letter: Passing the SAVE Act now sure sounds like ‘rigging’ the vote

(Kenny Holston | The New York Times) Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, speaks during a news conference regarding the SAVE Act, a voter ID bill, at the Capitol in Washington, on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

To date, I am not aware of any credible evidence that our voting systems are threatened by fraud. So, I highly doubt the need for drastic action to address it.

That said, I am also not opposed to further shoring up voter ID processes to prevent something that is not a problem now from becoming one. But the timing of doing so matters greatly.

At the moment, many millions of people would not meet the new ID requirements imposed by the SAVE act. They are people eligible to vote who would be suddenly disallowed the right to do so. That, actually, does constitute “rigging” the vote. To avoid the sudden removal of so many eligible voters in our attempt to further secure our voting systems, we need to first allow time and assistance for millions of people to get their ID in order.

Passing the SAVE Act now would just be cutting them off, which would be an egregious violation of their rights.

Note: There are more reasons why I don’t support the SAVE Act, but one subject at a time.
