With the incessant lies from the White House, it’s best to turn to fiction for the truth. William Faulkner, one of our greatest novelists, had a deep understanding of history and the power of the past. He said, “Nothing is ever forgotten. Nothing is ever lost. It’s too valuable” (“The Reivers,” 1962).

Trump is a liar.

Bears Ears and Grand Escalante

“You can’t go hunting. You can’t go fishing. You can’t do anything, “You can virtually not even walk on it.” — Donald Trump

Hunting and fishing and hiking are allowed and popular at both monuments. Utah manages hunting and fishing in the monuments. Utah’s governor and congressional delegation, however, cheered Trump on when he reduced the size of both monuments, failing to call out his lies.

Mail-in-voting

“When you do mail-in voting, inherently it’s a rigged election.” — Donald Trump

Utah does a superb job at managing mail-in-voting. Trump votes by mail.

Reflecting pool

“The 350-foot gash, made by a very sharp knife or razors, is actually numerous slashes over a very long 350-foot length. It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition.” — Donald Trump

There is no evidence that vandals destroyed the reflecting pool.

The GOP fails to call out Trump’s daily contradictions, daily lies, his nasty treatment of others, and his disdain for the due process clause of the 14th Amendment.

The silence of our governor and congressional delegation in response to Trump’s lies, contradictions and incomprehensible midnight rants will not protect them from history.

Faulkner is correct, “Nothing is ever lost. It’s too valuable.” Many elected officials in Utah share responsibility for the agony of the Trump administration. History will remember.
