Sen. Mike Lee being a lost cause given his sponsorship of the so-called SAVE Act, I wish to urge all Utah voters who care about their rights to contact Sen. Curtis and ask that he vote “No” on SAVE, as the last thing it would do is “save America.”
For starters, it is absurd to say the bill would restore faith in the integrity of the voting process when it is Mr. Trump himself who has labored for years now to undermine such faith.
In Utah where we have voted entirely by mail — entirely successfully, safely, simply, and without fraud — for a couple of decades now; SAVE makes no sense whatsoever.
We would all have to mail in — along with our ballots — a photocopy of our driver’s license or passport. So much for the secret ballot! And what are the county clerks to do with all those IDs? Hold them until Mr. Trump demands they be turned over to him?
As far as I can see, the bill would mainly serve to disenfranchise mostly married women and the poor, those who would have most difficulty accessing the necessary paperwork to vote or to register in the first place. Is it any surprise these are the people whom Mr. Trump assumes are more likely to vote Democratic? This bill is clearly meant to be first a voter suppression law.
But perhaps scariest of all, the act would also require states to hand over their voter registration lists to the Department of Homeland Security for review. What could possibly be more chilling? Is not this a step towards Mr. Trump’s expressed desire to nationalize elections in contravention of the Constitution?
It would certainly enable him to gather more control on who votes into his own hands, a frightening follow-up to DOGE’s co-opting and retaining Social Security databases — as indeed has already happened.
Do not be fooled. Make it clear we do not support this literal BAD Act.
