What a difficult time it is for our country. But it’s not because our toddlers are being separated from their fathers and thrown in police cars. It’s not because the most vulnerable of us are stripped of much needed basic services, such as food. It’s also not because those who feel sadness and helplessness for others are confused at the lack of sympathy and caring seen on a daily basis.

But it is a difficult time in our country because Donald Trump and the policies he initiated were the beginning of all of this negativity and hateful mess we now live in.

Donald Trump seems to thrive on his policies that are shown to promote cruelty, heinous acts and caustic emotional behavior. Yes, what a difficult time for an everyday person with basic human emotions of goodwill towards others. Basic human emotions that are obviously missing from our leader and his cronies. Sadly, we are paying a very high price for this lack of empathy and caring for our neighbors. We are paying with our country’s fading dignity and the disappearing of everyday basic human caring.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
