Letter: Road tripping away, John Curtis’ doesn’t understand the point of town halls

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) U.S. Rep. John Curtis (UT-03) speaks during the Conservative Climate Summit 2024 at Utah Valley University in Orem on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024.

Senator John Curtis made a statement to The Tribune that people come to town halls to listen, learn and engage.

No, we come to town halls to ask questions of our elected representatives. Pointed questions in a public forum so that you are held accountable. Not softball questions filtered by your staffers to make you look good.

Driving around one of the most beautiful states in the union chatting with random business owners, school superintendents, elected officials and students is not a weeklong town hall. That’s a road trip.

Lastly when a group gets organized enough to show up in mass to protest something, it shows that people are pretty upset.

Maybe you could read the room — if you were in the room.
