Letter: Inland Port will bring increased traffic, noise and pollution, and negate benefits of living here

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A rally against the Inland Port at the state Capitol in Salt Lake City on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.

I’ve been reading about the Inland Port. One of its benefits is to provide jobs. If Utah is boasting about its low unemployment, even during the pandemic, it seems like creating jobs is not a priority.

The thought of potential damage to our air and water quality in the Salt Lake Valley seems like it would outweigh the potential need for jobs. Most of these jobs will not be the high-tech, high-wage jobs promised anyway.

Could it be for the prestige? Salt Lake City, the hub of commerce? It seems counter to everything this state represents: open space, bird migration, beautiful vistas, cheaper, slower lifestyle, outdoor activities, such as bicycling, hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing.

The increased traffic, noise and pollution would negate the benefits of living here.

I warn of the satellite hubs, too. Eventually they will grow together as more portage, more people, more commuters move into the area.

Rural life will look more attractive. But as the population moves outward the open areas will fill up. Not a pretty picture.
