Letter: We must ensure our republic will endure

It is hypocritical and disingenuous for the Republican party to assert that impeaching President Trump again would only further divide our country and prevent us from healing and moving forward as a nation. Their divisive politics over the last four years and their continued support of the false narrative that fraud caused President Trump to lose the election created the misplaced anger that overflowed Jan. 6 in the seditious assault on the U.S. Capitol.

This is the consequence of misleading their supporters.

We cannot start to come together as Americans to address the problems our country faces until the authenticity of the election results is universally acknowledged.

President Trump used this false narrative to incite a rebellion against the very foundations of our democracy and needs to have serious consequences so that no future president will consider, even for a moment, following the example set by him.

Yes, in the short run, it may make healing our country more difficult, but there is nothing more important than assuring that our republic will endure, and that democracy (and facts) will determine who will represent our citizens.
