In response to Dale Nelson’s letter, “Ignorance shouldn’t be an excuse to throw out tradition,” ignorance is used constantly to explain away practices that have long outlived their usefulness. I applaud Bountiful High School Principal Aaron Hogge for starting the process to select a more culturally appropriate mascot.
Change is not always welcome, but in this instance, it is overdue. Yes, it would be easier to not change things, but it is time. I would remind Mr. Nelson that the novel “Tale Teller” is a story based in Indian Country, the Navajo Nation. With the students attending Shiprock High School being of Native American descent, it makes far more sense for them to choose Chieftains as their mascot. A school in a very Caucasian neighborhood, not so much.
