It has been well more than two weeks since Gov. Gary Herbert and the coronavirus task force (led by Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox) implemented the new COVID categories in their efforts to decrease infections and save lives. The results of their failed leadership are a string of record COVID cases in nearly every corner of the state with no relief in sight.

As our hospitals are overloaded and health care workers beg for help, the Republican leaders continue to offer no substantive solutions like statewide mask mandates and lockdowns, as have proven successful elsewhere. They only say “pretty please,” as our friends and family members die.

Today, by their own inaction, the GOP is a party that has indisputably proven that they not are pro-life. By opening up our economy before meeting recommended metrics, they have demonstrated a complete lack of leadership, thereby guaranteeing record breaking infections and deaths. Ironically, and quite frankly embarrassingly, the GOP’s lack of governing has negatively impacted our economy much more so than if we had actual leadership. In prioritizing profits over people in such a short-term view, they have proven to be completely incompent and negligent. As a result, we will continue to have many more infections, deaths and a much longer-lasting injury to our economy and to the lives of all Utahns.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
