Dear Sen. Lee,
I read your dire prediction of what a Democratic victory in November would spell for our country. I agree that you should be fearful, not for what the Democrats will do, but for what voters will do to hold your Republican Party accountable. The Grand Old Party has tossed aside many of its cherished principles, including fiscal and personal responsibility, to become a cult guided by a grifter.
You and your colleagues made a devil’s bargain. This bargain allowed the party to remain unified and the GOP has used Trump as a means to an end. Your own statements and those of your colleagues make it obvious that you understood what kind of man you were supporting. In exchange for your fealty and silence, your party has been able to redesign the judiciary branch, deregulate industry and diminish oversight.
However, every bargain you make with the devil eventually comes due. That is what you and your party fears. During the Garland nomination, the repeated refrain from the GOP was that the American people should have a say. Yet here we are, a month before the election, and your colleagues are rushing to confirm Barrett to the Supreme Court, while COVID relief is placed on hold.
It is so apparent that you are terrified to listen to the American people. Perhaps you have seen a few polls and have an inkling of what they will have to say about you and the party of Trump. You could have stood up for due process and requested witness testimony during the impeachment, but you were silent. You stand firm for your tribe, but not so much for our republic. Americans are going to vote your party into irrelevance, not because we want to save Democrats, but because we want to save democracy.
