In June, I had a letter to The Public Forum published. The gist of it was my concern that by September, our nation could easily reach 200,000 COVID-19 deaths. I was using a formula put forth by Dr. Anthony Fauci.

It is September, and that milestone has been achieved. Now, we have additional members of the medical profession stating that without federal and local state governments providing much-needed leadership, more of our fellow Americans will also perish over the ensuing months.

Where is the leadership of our elected officials? It is wanting, and we are dying. You know of whom I speak. They are complicit in the deaths of 200,000 Americans and counting.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
