Letter: Sensible solutions to our law enforcement problems

(Noah Berger | AP file photo) Police use chemical irritants and crowd control munitions to disperse protesters during a demonstration in Portland, Ore., Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020.

Kudos to Richard Longo for his sensible op-ed “Could there be a military solution to racial injustice?” Based upon his 35-year military career, Mr. Longo, a retired Army major general, makes these recommendations to address racial injustice in our law enforcement systems: provide no immunity to individuals for their actions while on duty; mandate psychological testing of police officers, new and currently serving; hold the chain of command leaders responsible; and provide escalation-of-force training.

These recommendations are the first common sense solutions that I have read anywhere. It would help us all if law enforcement on the federal, state and local levels took notice and applied these solutions now, not next month or next year.
