Donald Trump is a gifted showman. He is a gifted cult leader. That is not what we need as a country. We need a man with morals and values, and Trump has demonstrated that he has neither. Joe Biden should inform Trump that he will debate him only if Trump immediately releases his taxes. Which, of course, Trump would not do because it would expose his criminality.

We are reading that in 2017, Trump offered the directorship of the FBI to John Kelly but only on the condition that Kelly would vow loyalty to Trump. Does that ring a bell? Remember that former FBI director James Comey, under oath before a Congressional committee, testified that Trump asked him for a vow of loyalty and when Comey wouldn’t do it, Trump fired him.

These “debates” will not serve Biden well, and it will give Trump another platform to spin his lies and obfuscations. Don’t debate him, Joe — it will only serve to diminish your odds of saving our country from the swamp of Trump.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
