I am daily aghast at the letters to The Public Forum, and journalistic reports, of parents protesting against their children being asked to wear small face masks to attend school, or at all, as an infringement of their rights of freedom of choice.
I grew up in the United Kingdom and started school at five years old during the latter years of World War II. For over a year of that schooling we were required to have our bulky gas masks with us at all times, stored close to our desks during class and frequently practiced in their use.
Does anybody even think that parents were at that time protesting those and risking their children’s lives to a possible deadly gas attack even though it might never have happened? The answer is, of course, no, but this current deadly coronavirus pandemic has appened, and it is all around us.
Mask up please and keep your children and their teachers safe. It is a simple decision.
