Letter: Scott Bell will listen to the voters

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Signed tax referendum petitions at the Salt Lake County Clerk's Office in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020.

Remember those ballot initiatives Utahns worked hard to get onto our 2018 ballot? Remember last winter, the unpopular tax bill that even taxed food? The majority of Utahns let our Legislature know what is important to them. But many legislators ignored their own constituents.

Utah Rep. Steve Christiansen, R-West Jordan, supported that regressive tax bill. He claimed he listened but ignored prolonged public outcry against it. In doing so, he followed the pattern of Ken Ivory, his predecessor, who helped gut Proposition 2 and Proposition 3 even though most of his constituents voted for them.

Christiansen will face Scott Bell this November. Mr. Bell spent hundreds of hours collecting thousands of signatures for those ballot initiatives. He listened to each individual who signed those booklets to verify every person understood exactly what they were signing.

If you want a representative who will thoughtfully listen to you, think about Scott Bell. He’s running in HD47, which covers parts of West Jordan, Midvale and South Jordan. Google his name and talk to him. He will actually listen to what you have to say.
