Thanks to The Salt Lake Tribune for publishing the opinion piece by Jean Hill on June 5. I only wish I was smart enough to have written it, as she articulates so clearly that across the board tax cuts will harm Utah’s most vulnerable.
My understanding, from listening to the May 13 Executive Appropriation Committee meeting, is that Utah currently holds $5.4 billion in rainy day funds and other budget reserves. Across-the-board budget cuts have been known to disproportionately hurt low-income and minority people. This is no time to further inequality.
With a pandemic, earthquake, drought and riots, these are the rainy days in Utah that our Legislature has wisely saved for.
