Gov. Gary Herbert has once again demonstrated a callous lack of leadership and egregious partisanship.

His deflection to the Davis County Health Department to enforce state COVID-19 orders in response to Kaysville Mayor Kathy Witt, a Republican, openly defying these orders is putting us all at risk.

When Salt Lake Mayor Jenny Wilson, a Democrat, asked for the county to remain under orange orders to protect citizens in one of Utah’s hardest hit counties, Herbert refused.

The governor is willing to risk the lives of Utahns to please his Republican friends. He makes Donald Trump proud.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
