Letter: With rights come responsibilities

I was taught that with rights, or freedom, comes responsibility. Our country functions on the balance between rights and responsibilities.

I have no problem with Ammon Bundy, the Utah Business Revival or other protesters across the country exercising their First Amendment right to assemble. However, I think that all of these people should sign a pledge that, if they contract COVID-19, they would not call 911, or go to any physician, emergency room or hospital.

They chose to exercise a right; they should also take responsibility. Do not burden our health care system or put more first responders and medical personnel at risk because you chose to ignore the directives designed to protect public health and safety.

David Zangrilli, Sandy

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
