Letter: Patriotism is acting for the common good

(Rick Bowmer | AP) Utah Gov. Gary Herbert holds his face mask as he walks off following the daily COVID-19 media briefing at the Utah State Capitol Thursday, April 9, 2020, in Salt Lake City.

It is fascinating to observe the difference in the behavior of some (President Trump, Gov. Gary Herbert and Ammon Bundy as examples) around ways to contain the spread of COVID-19 and the behavior of many, many Americans.

The simple act of wearing a mask, for example, is something we all can do, not for yourself but as a way to do something for others, a way to act for the common good in case you happen to be an unknowing transmitter of the virus.

Instead of decrying, “I won’t do it for myself,” (Trump) and missing the entire point of doing it for others, or espousing that we have a “God-given and constitutional right to assemble” (Bundy), put on a mask and adopt a statewide stay-at-home order (Herbert).

Acting for the common good is what patriotism is all about.
