Letter: Have we learned the lessons of Italy?

(Alessandra Tarantino | AP file photo) The Italian flag hangs from the balcony of the French Embassy in Rome, Friday, March 27, 2020.

Last week I was impressed with the way the state of Utah showed leadership and collaboration to get ahead of the spread of COVID-19. Now I am less clear.

I wonder if Gov. Gary Herbert is watching the analysis of the missteps in Italy, including being late to the game to "shelter in place," and the resulting soar in the death rate?

State epidemiologist Angela Dunn points to China for us to understand timelines and outcomes, but we are not acting as aggressively as did China.

In what ways is Utah acting in ways “very similar” to China? I don’t see it.
