Letter: Officials are overreacting to the coronavirus

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Gov. Gary Herbert speaks at a news conference on Friday, March 13, 2020.

The state of Utah, Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City School District’s office are but a few of the hundreds of governmental and quasi-governmental agencies that have now depended on hysteria to make disastrous policy decisions. I have been in contact with all of those above-mentioned local agencies and asked all of them what medical professionals they have consulted who have counseled them on the disastrous and ill-informed decisions they are making on our behalf with relation to the COVID-19 “outbreak.” Without exception it has been various health departments (mind you, also government entities). My second question was, “Are you following their directives?” To which again, universally, I got a long pause and no direct answer. I then asked what respected medical personnel outside of government agencies they consulted, and again the long pause and no direct answer.

I, on the other hand, have spoken to three physicians, one epidemiologist and several other health professionals and have universally received the same response: overreaction by those making these decisions.

They are reacting to a virus that thus far has a lower mortality rate (adjusting for the age of those contracting it) than the common cold, most flu outbreaks and beestings worldwide.

So what is the reason for this overreaction? I can’t come up with an answer. But as I have always told my children over the years, if you could understand the actions of the insane, then you would be insane yourself. I am now adding politicians to that category. And who wants to be in either one of those groups?

Bob Barr, Salt Lake City
