Letter: A place for ‘ugly’ food

(Joshua McKerrow | The Baltimore Sun via AP file photo) A carrot at Imperfect Produce in Severn, Md., on Nov. 12, 2018. The company delivers fruit and vegetables that have been rejected by grocery stores for not fitting cosmetic standards.

America wastes a lot of food. I’ve read many recent articles about the produce that isn’t “pretty enough” for the grocery stores. Unfortunately there is not yet a good place for the public to buy this produce, except some farmers markets with a conscience.

Here’s an idea. Instead of rolling back Michelle Obama’s healthy school food programs due to the high cost of healthy fresh food, let the government work with farmers directly to utilize the “ugly” produce for the schools.
