Letter: Rep. Ben McAdams deserves kudos for how he approaches governance

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Ben McAdams announces that he will vote yes on the House impeachment vote during a news conference at Murray City Hall, Monday, Dec. 16, 2019.

Rep. Ben McAdams’ vote for impeachment was a critical stand against the creeping doom of American indifference to corruption and the rule of law, but it’s not why I voted for him last November. His public statement was a moving indictment of the irresponsible behavior of the president, Congress and the American public that has brought us to this place, but it’s not why I made phone calls.

While Democrats and Republicans alike were issuing fiery statements and chewing the scenery on CSPAN, my congressman was working. Working on strengthening protections against fraud. Working on bringing down prescription drug prices. Working on controlling an out-of-control federal deficit. With Democrats and Republicans alike — he was working.

When it came to cast this historic impeachment vote, he stepped back from the politics, put the best interests of the country first, carefully reviewed the evidence, considered the arguments, and then made the best of the tough choices he had before him. That’s why he has my support. I voted for him because of the way he approaches governance, and that’s why I’ll be voting for him again next year.
