Letter: Republicans should defend the Constitution

(Alex Brandon | AP file photo) President Donald Trump gives thumbs up as he steps off Air Force One, accompanied by Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., at the Palm Beach International Airport, Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

As a registered Republican who now votes as an independent, I'm extremely dismayed at my former party’s failure to protect the Constitution and the rule of law in favor of defending Donald Trump.

The issues being raised here are serious offenses against the Constitution. I urge my congressional representatives and fellow citizens to focus on real witness testimonies from a variety of credible sources, as I have, rather than partisan pundit interpretations.

Whether or not you believe Trump should be removed from office, the Trump administration's actions in connection with the charges brought against him deserve censure. These include refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas, refusal to provide documents required by Congress to fulfill its role as a co-equal branch of government and threatening and retaliating against those who are fulfilling their patriotic duty to respond to Congress. All are examples of deeply unethical behavior.

I call upon Utah’s congressional leaders to preserve and defend the constitution as opposed to their political careers, one political party or Donald Trump.
