Letter: Watkins must step down

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) John Nielsen, right, a former commissioner for public safety, with University of Utah President Ruth Watkins, speaks at a news conference presenting the findings of a review of the Lauren McCluskey case, in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018.

The headline of columnist Robert Gehrke’s Oct. 13 column was “For the U. to clear the air, Watkins must step up.” Considering her ineptitude in the Lauren McCluskey incident and other such situations, I would suggest, “For the U. to correct their mistakes, Watkins must step down.”

Two campus police officers, all part of the totally incompetent handling of the tragic McCluskey case and other serious infractions against students, eventually left the university. Both were hired by other Utah law enforcement agencies, a blatant misjudgment of qualification that should seriously worry the communities they now serve.
