Letter: Support the Presidential Extortion Protection Act

(Evan Vucci | AP) President Donald Trump speaks during an event on healthcare prices in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, in Washington.

I call on Sen. Mike Lee to sponsor the Presidential Extortion Protection Act to set for all time the absolute right of the president to use public money and the institutions of government to extort foreign governments for their own personal or political advantage. I also call on Republican Rep. Chris Stewart to sponsor companion legislation in the House.

No one disputes the evidence of self-serving. Most Republicans are willing to say Trump’s actions were not appropriate, but are only willing to wave the naughty finger. Let’s get this into law to put away the nonsense promoted by many Democrats and much of the population that we don’t want our democracy controlled by extortion of foreign governments. Many in Congress clearly do.

Lee and the rest of our Republican delegation should also take part in the entourage to the May Day parade in Moscow with President Trump. This is a powerful message to Vladimir Putin that our government supports his effort to take as much control over our elections as he can possibly devise. This makes more convenient the argument that the people should decide at the next election, since it will be an election determined to a large extent by foreign ability to change votes in some key areas. Let’s keep our president elected.

Pass the Presidential Extortion Protection Act.
