Letter: Soviet-style justice

(J. Scott Applewhite | AP file photo) Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of President Donald Trump's chief GOP allies, says he will introduce a resolution condemning the Democratic-controlled House for pursuing a "closed door, illegitimate impeachment inquiry," during a news conference at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019.

What has happened to the Republican Party?

The Trump administration sanctions and seems to encourage hate speech. Journalists are targeted and reviled by the president and members of his team. The patriotism of long-serving diplomats and public servants is called into question. Even decorated military veterans with decades of service to this country are targeted by Republicans.

In a shocking abdication of judicial responsibility, Lindsey Graham, chair of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, states he won’t even read the impeachment transcripts in the presumptive impeachment trial of Donald Trump. This is from an elected official who has a mandated responsibility to be a fair-minded jurist. Through all of it, Republican politicians have tacitly sanctioned these abominations with their silence.

The need for temperate and thoughtful leadership from both parties has never been greater. Selecting the good of the party over the good of the country has been ruinous. This must be the Soviet-style justice that I’ve been hearing so much about.
