Letter: The culture at the University of Utah must change

(Leah Hogsten | Tribune file photo) University of Utah students make signs for a campus walkout on Oct. 21, 2019, in a show of solidarity to call attention for increased campus safety and protest the school's response after a student was murdered on campus last year. Monday's walkout was one day prior to the 1-year anniversary of the murder of Lauren McCluskey.

The University of Utah can spend millions of dollars on new lighting, campus safety programs, etc., etc., etc., but until the authorities actually believe a young woman when she says she is in danger, it won’t do one rat’s patoot of good.

If anyone on campus had believed Lauren McCluskey and actually done their job, she would still be alive. All the money and talk in the world will not stop the violence until women are believed, and the culture won’t change until the university takes accountability.

So far, they haven’t. Step up!
