Letter: Utah, where are your manners?

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) People take to the Adams Canyon trailhead in Layton on Friday evening, Aug. 9, 2019, as it connects to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Davis County is proposing to tie its many fragments of the famous Bonneville Shoreline Trail into an unbroken 39-mile stretch from City Creek Canyon to the Weber River.

It is that time of year when the fall colors entice many of us to go out and hike the hills. One can’t help but feel joyful in the crisp air while taking in the beautiful scenery.

It is in this context that I am repeatedly astounded at the rudeness of many people on the trail. In all the years that I lived in the Midwest, everyone always returned a friendly hello in response to my greeting as I passed them on the trail. Here in Utah, I can’t count the number of times my cheerful “good morning” was greeting with a passive stare or silent indifference.

Utahns pride themselves for their reputation for looking out for their neighbors. Gov. Gary Herbert, in comments for why Utah was selected to host the vice presidential debate in 2020, said, “Our citizens have an excellent reputation for hospitality.”

I fail to see it on the trail. Utah, where are your manners?
