Letter: A case of the irresponsible letting evil triumph

(Carolyn Kaster | AP) President Donald Trump speaks at the Hispanic Heritage Month Reception in the East Room of the White House in Washington on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2019.

Now that we see Trump trashing the Constitution once again by colluding with another foreign government to get dirt on an opponent, it should behoove everyone to defend the Constitution and forget politics but, once again, we see Republicans putting party and Trump ahead of country.

The only appropriate response for us that still value our democratic republic is to vote every single one of these Republicans out of office because they are all complicit in violating their oath of office and trashing our Constitution. We cannot expect Republicans to change their behavior and do the responsible thing by impeaching Trump, but we can do the responsible thing by voting every last one of them out of office.

What keeps coming to my mind is a quote often attributed to Edmund Burke: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” although it is quite a stretch to call these irresponsible Republicans “good men.”

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
