Letter: Vote for those who help the 99%

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Hundreds of students from around the state chant and sing as they gather on the steps of the Utah State Capitol Building, demanding action on the climate crisis, on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019.

Cherise Udell had a recent commentary published which implored Utahns to become activists regarding climate change, urging us to participate in a climate strike that occurred on Sept 20. She cited an academic paper which says political change doesn’t occur unless at least 3.5% of the population become activists.

She encouraged us to talk to people in our social sphere, talk to our legislators, write op-eds, and show up at rallies. She says we who do nothing are almost as bad as climate deniers. I think we are worse.

An alternative approach is to simply vote for political candidates who support policies which benefit 99% of the population as opposed to 1%.

However, if you value your 30-round capacity semi-automatic weapon more than human life, or are vehemently against an option to prevent unwanted children from suffering a lifetime of emotional distress and want to increase the number of unwanted children by eliminating sex education and access to birth control, then you should definitely vote to make rich people richer at the expense of others, all while helping to destroy the societal, economic and environmental future for your children.
