Letter: This is what the LDS Church is worried about?

(Rick Bowmer | AP) Flowers bloom in front of the Salt Lake Temple, at Temple Square, in Salt Lake City. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is reminding members that coffee is prohibited no matter how fancy the name, that vaping is banned despite the alluring flavors and that marijuana is outlawed unless prescribed by a competent doctor.

Regarding the recent Salt Lake Tribune article titled “Beware of those fancy coffee drinks, church warns Latter-day Saints” by Brady McCombs, of The Associated Press, I have this response:

Is this really what LDS Church officials are worried about? What about separations of families at our Mexican border? What about gun violence in our society? What about protecting our air, water and earth, which are God's creations? What about the racism and anti-immigrant rants which come out of the current White House, which contribute to hate and mass shootings?

The list goes on and on. These are the real moral issues.

Please, please, LDS leaders, talk about issues that truly matter and talk about them at your next, and subsequent, LDS General Conferences. You have tremendous power and influence.

Please use your proclamations to make our country and our communities better places to live for all of us. This is also the route to getting new LDS Church members and to grow the LDS Church.

Mark Rothacher, Salt Lake City
