Letter: Republicans only have plans for destruction

(J. Scott Applewhite | AP file photo) The Capitol is seen from the roof of the Canadian Embassy in Washington on June 20, 2019.

I hear every Republican candidate and current office holder decrying the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) as “something that can’t be fixed” and advocating doing away with the entire program.

I have yet to hear even one Republican put forth any option for covering all those they will cavalierly throw to the wolves. Until I see some concrete plan presented by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or any other Republican, I will continue to believe Republicans have no plans for anything but destruction.

Show me concrete plans to benefit the real people of this country, not just a few of the very rich, and perhaps I will consider a Republican candidate. And until I see Republican officeholders voluntarily giving up their government-funded lifetime health care benefits and pensions, I can’t take seriously their cries about the evils of government-run programs.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
