Letter: We expect too much from Mitt Romney

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Mitt Romney speaks during a town hall meeting at the Provo City Hall Council Chambers on Friday, June 21, 2019.

People seem to expect way too much from Mitt Romney. They somehow think he’s going to rescue us and stand up to Trump.

Sorry, ain’t gonna happen.

Romney lacks the courage, backbone and motivation for such things. He may meekly say some negative little thing about one of Trump’s latest tweets from the relative safety of some dark corner of the Senate basement, but that’s about it. Romney is there to help funnel more of our money up to the wealthy and corporations, and that’s it.

If you thought he was a man of vision and morals who would boldly and fiercely stand up for all Americans, you must have been thinking of Bernie Sanders.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
