Letter: Utah should not pay for San Juan County’s discrimination

(Zak Podmore | Tribune file photo) San Juan County Commissioner Kenneth Maryboy (left), Commissioner Willie Grayeyes, Oljato Chapter President James Adakai, and Commissioner Bruce Adams pose after the commission meeting in Oljato-Monument Valley, Utah, on Tuesday, July 2, 2019.

The blatant, dismissive and complacent cultural attitudes that have allowed previous leaders (and possibly some current leaders) of San Juan County to marginalize and discriminate against the Native Americans is something that we, as citizens of Utah, need to stand up to.

But to ask, as The Tribune Editorial Board did on July 20, that the residents of the state of Utah help pay for the tribulations of previous leaders of San Juan County, who brought and allowed such tribulations to be so pervasive, only continues the problem at hand.

Those previous leaders, not the state of Utah, need to be accountable for the legal fees that are so righteously owed to the Navajo Nation.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
