Letter: Don’t tell us about the killers

(Jeremy Harmon | The Salt Lake Tribune) University of Utah president Ruth V. Watkins speaks during a vigil for MacKenzie Lueck at the University of Utah on Monday, July 1, 2019.

I know the investigation has not been completed into the death of Mackenzie Lueck, but I think it is about time that the United States had a law similar to one in New Zealand. It prohibits the publication of the name of criminal defendants before trial.

I am tired of seeing constant photos of killers and their names splashed all over the TV and in the newspapers. I want to see the victim.

The perpetrators in some cases are looking for news coverage. They do not deserve it. The victims should have the spotlight shined on them, not the killer. Please do not show me constant photos and their names. They do not deserve any further news coverage. Let us know about the victims. They are the important ones.

Blur the killers face and stop beating us to death with their names. I don’t care about them. They did a very bad thing and deserve everything they get.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
