Letter: Biskupski alone in standing against inland port tyranny

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Mayor Jackie Biskupski holds a presser at the City County building on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, to speak out against SB234 as written, which creates the Utah Inland Port Authority, saying it deprives the city of local control in taxing and land use decisions.

This is an open letter to the members of the Salt Lake City Council. I wish to inform you of a major threat to Salt Lake City. I know you’re all aware of it but you don’t seem to be giving it the attention it deserves.

I'm talking about the proposed inland port. The legislatively driven port is a direct attack on the sovereignty and the future of our city. Fully 30% of the land in the city would be under the control of the inland port board, not one of whom was elected to this position.

Only one elected city official is standing up to this tyranny and she is our mayor, Jackie Biskupski.

Every one of you was elected to represent your constituents and protect the interests of your city, yet not one of you has stepped up. This is not about reelection or whether you like the mayor. It's our future.

I encourage you all to educate yourselves about the numerous negative impacts the port would have on Salt Lake and it's residents. Then do your job.

Katie Pappas, Salt Lake City
