Letter: The U.S. is not an energy conservation leader

(Rick Bowmer | AP file photo) About 25 protesters leave after interrupting an energy conference Thursday, May 30, 2019, hosted by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert in Salt Lake City.

In The Tribune’s reporting of Gov. Gary Herbert’s Energy Storage Project on May 31, Energy Secretary Rick Perry was quoted as saying “And, at the same time, we lead the world in reducing energy-related carbon emissions.”

Perhaps he should acquaint himself with the data included in the 2019 Climate Change Performance Index. The index is comprised of four categories: greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use and climate policy.

The U.S. performance for each of these categories is rated very low and, in the overall ranking of 60 countries for climate change performance, India ranks 11th, China ranks 33rd and the U.S. ranks 59th.

Perhaps our energy secretary should familiarize himself before he makes any further public announcements.
