Letter: With this president, math doesn’t stand a chance

(Alex Brandon | AP) President Donald Trump, with first lady Melania Trump, points as they arrive at Shannon Airport, Thursday, June 6, 2019, in Shannon, Ireland.

In mathematics, multiplying two negatives yields a positive. In grammar, a double negative means a positive.

When special counsel Robert Mueller thoughtfully declared, “We were not able to conclude the president did not commit obstruction of justice,” he indirectly states, “The president obstructed justice.”

But, in the miasma of our bizarre politics, Trump interprets Mueller’s statement as “no obstruction and no collusion.”

Truth, logic, decency, morality and decorum have suffered at the hands of this administration. Grammar really never had a chance, either. But the immutable laws of mathematics?

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
