Letter: McAdams missed a chance to reduce abortions

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Rep. Ben McAdams meets with The Salt Lake Tribune Editorial Board, Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams, D-Utah, claims to be pro-life and has said that he believes abortion is too common. But earlier this year he voted to send U.S. tax dollars overseas to promote abortions around the globe.

The most recent spending bill passed by the House (HR 21) to fund the majority of government operations reversed the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance (PLGHA) policy. It would simply require that foreign nongovernmental organizations receiving grant money for global health assistance to not perform or actively promote abortion.

When Republicans offered an amendment that would have reinstated PLGHA, two pro-life Democratic representatives, Dan Lipinski of Illinois and Collin Peterson of Minnesota, voted in support. Yet McAdams was not among them.

If McAdams truly is committed to reducing the number of abortions, this should have been a simple vote.
