Thank you, Professor Ron Mittelhammer, for your column "Still no accountability at the U. for murder on campus." A brilliant and well reasoned response to the murder of Lauren McCluskey on the University of Utah campus.
University President Ruth Watkins and campus police have seemingly shrugged off Lauren's murder. "Nothing could have prevented the crime," they say.
Not true, people. Lauren and her family called campus police something like 22 times for help about the crazy man stalking her. What did they do about it? Nothing.
I want to know:
1) Who specifically took Lauren's calls? Is there a phone log? Were the calls recorded? 2) Or did the calls just go to voice mail and nobody ever checked?
3) What do the phone-answering people at U. police actually do? Sit at a desk and play video games?
4) Or was it, "Oh, God, it's that McCluskey chick complaining again. Blow her off.”
I want the people there at phone-answering level to step up publicly and explain how do you live with yourselves.
