Letter: Hatch could win my respect by standing up to Trump

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Retiring seven-term Sen. Orrin Hatch was honored at the Utah Republican Nominating Convention Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Maverik Center.

It is becoming clearer every day that President Donald Trump may have violated the law.

What is needed are a few brave souls in the Senate and House of Representatives to put aside the blind partisanship and do the right thing.

We desperately need a Howard Baker — someone who will do his or her duty and do the right thing.

Orrin Hatch, you are the elder statesman of the Senate. You have the potential to make your legacy one of unselfish service to the country by removing the blinders and doing the right thing. I believe many other senators would follow your lead and step up as well.

I challenge you, sir, to do that. There was a time when you and Ted Kennedy rolled up your sleeves and got things done.

It is called “compromise.”

Give me and so many others in Utah and the entire nation a reason to respect you again.

Kevin M. Sillito, West Valley City
