Letter: Spencer Cox is the clear choice for Utah’s next governor

Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune Utah Lt. Governor Spencer Cox in the Capitol rotunda, Wednesday, February, 14, 2018.

It absolutely blows my mind that Jason Chaffetz is the highest-polling potential 2020 Republican gubernatorial candidate. Chaffetz was a disaster in Congress and would be an epic fail as governor. He didn’t even finish his term in Congress, leaving to take a job at Fox News. What kind of leader does that?

In my opinion, Spencer Cox is the clear choice for governor. Cox has done a fantastic job as lieutenant governor, demonstrating remarkable leadership ability and a willingness to bring all sides together. I’ve also been very impressed by his remarks concerning the LGBTQ community and immigrants. Cox’s authenticity is so refreshing for a politician.

President Harry S. Truman said, “In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.”

With Chaffetz, society would stand still. Under a Cox administration, the sky’s the limit. I believe Cox would be a worthy successor to Gov. Gary Herbert and continue the push to make Utah a great place to live, raise a family and do business.
